Supported Housing Officer
Keith spent 23 years in engineering before taking voluntary
redundancy in September 2000 to pursue a career change.
He enrolled on an Access to Social Work and Social Sciences
course at Yeovil College to gain entry into university
to study for a Diploma in Social Work.
Whilst at college Keith joined SCP as a part-time Supported
Housing Officer covering a low-support project in Yeovil.
As Keith enjoyed his work in housing, he became a full-time
Officer in September 2001 instead of going to university.
Keith covers our projects in Yeovil, Dorchester, Weymouth
and Exeter working with mental health clients, ex-offenders,
people on drug testing and treatment orders and non-priority
homeless.
Another project in Yeovil that Keith oversees is for
Care-leavers, providing semi-independent living for
young people coming out of Local Authority care or foster
care. The house is fully furnished and has three bed-spaces
for the young people and a further two for Community
Service Volunteers, who oversee the day-to-day running
of the house, act as mentors to the young people and
provide help with independent living.
The young people are encouraged as part of the project
to attend college, training or find employment. The
kitchen, lounge and bathroom are shared and it is hoped
that everyone will work at making it a "family
home" and all the residents are expected to participate
in keeping the house clean and tidy.
