A project in Shaftesbury, which aims to help vulnerable young adults,
has recently undergone refurbishment. There is to be an open afternoon
on Thursday 16 December from 2pm by Signpost Care Partnerships.
Jude Court is a purpose built project comprising 6 bedsits for
vulnerable young people aged between 16 and 24 who have experienced
difficulties with homelessness or who are care leavers. The aim
of the scheme is to provide youngsters with a stepping-stone to
full independent living. It is expected that they will attend or
actively be seeking to attend full time education, training or employment.
They are assisted with finding suitable pathways to achieve their
aims and ambitions.
Each tenant is provided with a lockable studio room, which has
its own sleeping area and kitchenette. They share the laundry, shower,
toilet and bathroom facilities. The tenants are expected to participate
in keeping the house and their rooms clean and tidy and to attend
house meetings. They all sign up to the house rules, which are put
in place to protect all tenants.
There is one full-time member of staff who is available to assist
tenants with problems that they may encounter. These may be housing,
financial or benefit issues, and can include problems of a more
personal nature or issues with other tenants.
Assistance is provided to access other appropriate services, and
to help tenants with social and living skills. Once tenants have
the confidence in these skills they will be assisted in finding
long-term move-on accommodation.
There are many charitable agencies involved with the work at Jude
Court including the Williams Williams Foundation, Shaftesbury Trinity
Centre Trust who donated a brand new top of the range computer for
the young people's exclusive use, and The Foyles Trust. These agencies
also help to provide additional facilities such as furnishings to
the tenants.
The tenants themselves also work hard to raise money and they have
recently been successful in obtaining a tremendous amount of support
from Buckfields Group Ltd, Blandford for paint and assistance to
decorate their own rooms.
Other generous donations have been made by Kingshott of Gillingham,
Focus, Tesco's and U-fit of Yeovil.
