Floating support is a service offered to clients in their own homes.
They could be owner/occupier, in private rented accommodation or
housing association.
The clients can come from all walks of life and different client
groups for example mental health disorder, drug/alcohol abuse, homeless.
The service mainly provides assistance with tenancy maintenance
and general counseling but includes ensuring that liaising with
social services, and other statutory agencies the client is involved
with, is maintained. Tenancy maintenance is to ensure that the client
does not receive or give harassment or nuisance, therefore can be
useful for owner/occupier. Helping with social skills, motivational
skills, time management and appointment keeping can be within the
support plan. Ensuring that they do not become socially excluded
and lead independent lives within the community.
The service is called 'Floating Support' because once the client
has established themselves in the community, and is confident and
able to live fully independently, the service moves to another client.
If the client has further need of the service it can return for
short periods at a time, this is especially useful for benefit claims,
which are normally reviewed six monthly. Nominations for Floating
Support are requested from the Local Authority where the service
is being used. Funding can come from a number of sources but mainly
from the Housing Corporation and Local Authority grants.
